What is EMC and EMC grounding with example

What is EMC ?

  • There are many source of EMI in various electronics system and equipment. These sources can be individual electric or mechanical component, circuit or PCB layout or complete system itself, Electromagnetic radiations and conducted emission are main source of EMI . There are different solutions to detect the source of EMI that is diagnosing the EMI is called as the Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC).

EMC Grounding

example which explains need of proper grounding/earthing for equipments under use.
  • Conventional Ground' is nothing but either Zero Impedance Point' or 'Equi-potential points. But this concept is not applicable to EMC For EMC, Grounding is nothing but providing low resistance path between electrical or electronic equipment and earth or common reference impedance plane to bypass EMI signal.
  • Thus electrical Grounding is essential for the protection of equipment and human beings against electrical shock, fire threat because of insulation burnout from lightning or electrical short circuit and EMI.
  • There are standard practices available for safety grounding or earthing.

Need of Grounding

  • Fig in Above gives an example which explains need of proper grounding/earthing for equipments under use.
  • The defective equipment causes difference in ground potential between two devices (pressure monitor and vacuum cleaner) current to flow through patient's body and causes hazardous. This may be dangerous for patient's health or may give incorrect measurement of the patient's medical parameter of which measurement is going on.
